Declaration of Historical Stewardship: Recognition of All Freedmen Historical Markers

ree

The Freedmen Reparations Fund Trust has formally issued a Declaration of Historical Stewardship asserting exclusive recognition of all historical markers, locations, and sites associated with Verified Freedmen. This includes cemeteries, churches, homesteads, schools, civic halls, and other places of cultural significance built or occupied by Freedmen communities from emancipation forward.

These markers tell a story beyond general Black history—they reflect the specific sacrifices, legal battles, and cultural contributions of Freedmen, whose status as formerly enslaved Americans and Reconstruction citizens cannot be erased or absorbed into generic racial narratives.

Through this declaration, the Trust affirms the following:

  • Freedmen-built institutions and locations shall be protected and acknowledged under Trust authority.

  • Mislabeling Freedmen markers as simply “African American” or “Black” history is a dilution of status and harms reparation claims and legal protections.

  • Historical integrity must be preserved, including accurate language tied to slavery, Reconstruction, Jim Crow resistance, and federal Freedmen classifications.

  • Freedmen Nation’s Economic Locator will include a registry of these verified markers to inform preservation, funding eligibility, and educational integrity.

This declaration ensures that no public or private institution can distort or co-opt Freedmen legacy sites without challenge. From school plaques to land acknowledgments, we are reclaiming our lineage-based history—not for symbolism, but for legal, cultural, and economic protection.

The Trust calls on local governments, historical societies, museums, and tourism boards to contact the Freedmen Reparations Fund Trust before designating, renaming, or interpreting sites related to Freedmen heritage.

We are the stewards of our story—and every marker is a legal thread in the fabric of our reparations foundation.
