The Copper Undertone Observation: An Institutional Research Inquiry Into U.S. Freedmen Successors

The Freedmen Reparations Fund Trust (FRFT) is publishing a new institutional research inquiry examining a recurring observation involving historical complexion terminology, U.S. Freedmen Successors, archival records, color science, population comparisons, genetics, and the historical reclassification of people in America.
We call this inquiry:
The Copper Undertone Observation
The inquiry began with a seemingly simple observation: across photographs of documented U.S. Freedmen families and communities, FRFT repeatedly encountered what appeared to be a red-brown, copper-toned undertone beneath different depths of brown skin.
Artificial intelligence helped us compare those visual patterns across photographs and populations.
But the more FRFT investigated, the less this became simply a question about photographs.
Historical dictionaries described people in the Americas as copper-colored.
Slavery-era advertisements and notices used copper complexion terminology to describe actual people.
Historical scholarship documents the enslavement of Indigenous Americans.
Historical records also demonstrate that racial classifications in the United States changed over time.
Population-genetics research shows that African populations, African-American populations, Indigenous populations, and other populations cannot simply be treated as genetically interchangeable.
And modern color science provides tools capable of determining whether what appears visually as “copper” can actually be measured.
The result is a multidisciplinary research question that FRFT believes deserves serious academic examination.
The evidence is not finished. The research has begun.

An Important Institutional Boundary
Before discussing the findings, FRFT must make one point unmistakably clear:
The Copper Undertone Observation is NOT part of Freedmen Status Verification.
FRFT does not determine whether someone is a Freedmen Successor by looking at that person’s skin.
Status Verification remains based upon documentary genealogy, historical records, family continuity, and records-based evidence.
A photograph cannot establish Freedmen status. A complexion cannot establish Freedmen status. A copper undertone cannot establish Freedmen status.
The Copper Undertone Observation is an independent historical and scientific research inquiry.
Its purpose is to determine whether a recurring observation noticed during FRFT’s broader work can withstand controlled scientific and archival examination.
1. How the Copper Undertone Observation Began
The project began through repeated visual comparison.
While reviewing photographs involving U.S. Freedmen-oriented reference material, FRFT noticed that individuals with substantially different skin depths sometimes appeared to share an underlying color characteristic.
Some were lighter brown. Others were medium brown. Others were considerably darker.
Yet under favorable lighting, a recurring red-brown, bronze, or copper-like reflectance appeared in portions of the skin.
FRFT began using artificial intelligence as a visual-assistance tool to compare photographs and describe apparent differences in warmth, red balance, golden coloration, olive coloration, neutral coloration, and copper-like reflectance.
AI did not prove the hypothesis.
AI helped us notice the question.
That distinction is critical.
2. The Same Person Could Produce Different Results
One of the most important discoveries came when FRFT compared different photographs of the same individuals.
A person could appear strongly copper-toned in one photograph and comparatively neutral in another.
Lighting, white balance, camera processing, makeup, foundation, filters, image compression, background reflection, exposure, and indoor versus outdoor photography could all affect the apparent result.
Even nearby clothing can influence reflected color.
That discovery prevented FRFT from treating ordinary photographs as reliable scientific measurements.
Instead, it established one of the most important conclusions of the exploratory phase:
If the Copper Undertone is a measurable phenomenon, it must survive standardized photography and calibrated color measurement.
That realization moved the project from visual observation toward color science.
3. Testing the Observation Against African Comparison Populations
FRFT did not want to build a hypothesis by looking only at photographs that appeared to support it.
We deliberately expanded the exploratory comparison.
Photographs representing people from multiple countries, populations, and regions within Africa were examined as comparison material.
Considerable diversity was visible. The African comparison images included presentations that appeared golden, yellow-gold, olive, neutral, tawny, reddish-brown, deep brown, and other variations.
Africa cannot scientifically be treated as one uniform population or one uniform complexion.
Nevertheless, within the particular photographic comparison conducted during FRFT’s exploratory work, we did not observe the same recurring population-level copper pattern that had initially attracted our attention within the U.S. reference material.
That became another research question.
It is equally important to explain what this result does not mean.
FRFT has not established that copper undertones are absent from Africa. The comparison images were not obtained through randomized population sampling, photographed under identical standardized lighting, or measured using calibrated instruments.
Therefore, our finding is narrower:
The exploratory African comparison set did not reproduce the recurring pattern FRFT believed it was observing within its U.S. reference material.
That result should now be independently tested.
4. Historical America Was Already Using the Word “Copper”
The investigation became considerably more interesting when FRFT moved from modern photographs into historical language.
“Copper” is not merely terminology created by this project.
Historical sources used copper-colored as a human complexion descriptor.
Early descriptions of Indigenous peoples in the Americas employed copper-related language when describing complexion, and historical dictionaries preserved this terminology.
That raises an important question:
If historical observers were describing people in America as copper-colored, what exactly were they observing?
Modern colorimetry provides an opportunity to investigate a description that historical observers could express only through words.
5. Slavery-Era Escape Advertisements Added Another Layer
FRFT subsequently examined historical runaway, fugitive, and escape advertisements connected to American slavery.
Those records can be particularly valuable because advertisements frequently provided detailed physical descriptions intended to facilitate identification.
Height, age, scars, clothing, speech, occupation, physical characteristics—and complexion—could all be recorded.
During this archival review, FRFT encountered historical descriptions employing terminology including variations of:
“copper”
“copper colored”
“copper colour”
“light copper complexion”
and
“dark copper colour.”
These were historical descriptions of people living within American slavery-era society.
The next question becomes considerably more significant:
Who were these copper-described people?
That question cannot be answered through complexion alone.
It requires records.
6. The American Aborigine Enslavement Question
Any serious investigation must recognize an important component of American slavery history:
Indigenous Americans were enslaved.
Native enslavement occurred within colonial North America and interconnected Atlantic systems.
The historical record therefore cannot begin with the assumption that every enslaved person in America had precisely the same geographic origin or historical pathway.
This becomes particularly relevant when historical records contain Indigenous classifications, copper complexion descriptions, enslavement, mixed families, changing racial terminology, and later classifications such as “colored,” or “mulatto,” “Negro.”
FRFT believes these intersections deserve systematic investigation.
7. The Reclassification Hypothesis
FRFT is examining a historical reclassification hypothesis.
The question is whether some darker copper-complexioned American families who later appeared under classifications such as colored, mulatto, or Negro can be genealogically connected to earlier people recorded as Indian, Native, American, copper-colored, or under specific Indigenous/community classifications.
FRFT is not asserting that complexion proves such ancestry.
The hypothesis must be tested through records.
The proposed archival chain is:
Early American record
↓
Indian / Native / American or other historical designation
↓
Copper or related complexion description
↓
Enslavement, servitude, or documented legal status
↓
Changing racial classification
↓
Emancipation-era documentation
↓
Freedmen-era records
↓
Documented family continuity
↓
Modern Successors
Every connection requires evidence.
If researchers can establish these chains within individual families, the significance would not come from someone’s modern appearance.
It would come from documented historical continuity and reclassification.
8. Why Skin Matters—and Why Skin Alone Is Not Enough
Skin is the body’s largest organ.
It is also the biological surface through which pigmentation becomes visible.
That makes skin relevant to this inquiry, but it also makes skin particularly vulnerable to misuse.
Human history contains countless examples of appearance being used to impose racial, political, legal, and social categories.
FRFT therefore approaches the Copper Undertone Observation cautiously.
When we say:
“The evidence may be in our skin,”
we are not saying skin replaces genealogy.
We are saying that a recurring physical observation may contain information worthy of scientific measurement and may direct researchers toward historical questions that records can answer.
Skin provides a research lead.
Records provide historical evidence.
Science determines whether the physical observation is reproducible.
9. Moving From Photographs to Colorimetry
The next phase should not rely on people simply deciding whether someone’s complexion “looks copper.”
Color can be measured.
A university-level study could use standardized photography, controlled illumination, calibrated reference cards, spectrophotometry, and established color spaces such as CIELAB.
CIELAB separates measurable characteristics including:
L* — lightness
a* — red versus green position
b* — yellow versus blue position
Researchers can also calculate chroma and hue angle.
That creates a scientifically meaningful question:
Does the proposed Copper Undertone correspond to a reproducible colorimetric pattern among a properly recruited and documented research cohort?
If yes, researchers can characterize it.
If no, researchers can reject or revise the hypothesis.
Either result advances the research.
10. Beauty Supply and the Everyday Undertone Problem
There is also a practical reason this observation may matter.
The cosmetics industry already recognizes something important:
Skin depth and skin undertone are different variables.
Two individuals can have approximately the same visible depth of brown skin yet require very different foundation formulations.
Cosmetic products commonly distinguish among undertones such as neutral, golden, red, olive, warm, and cool.
Many consumers know the experience of finding a foundation that appears to match the darkness or lightness of their complexion but still looks wrong once applied.
The underlying problem may be undertone.
FRFT’s observation therefore raises another testable question:
Are copper-balanced brown undertones inadequately represented within existing beauty and cosmetic shade systems?
Researchers could compare calibrated skin measurements against commercially available foundation undertone categories and determine whether particular measurable color profiles are consistently mismatched.
The inquiry could therefore have implications extending beyond history into cosmetic science, dermatology, photography, computer vision, digital imaging, and consumer-product development.
11. HLA Population Profiles: A Separate Research Track
FRFT has also examined published research involving Human Leukocyte Antigen—or HLA—population profiles.
HLA systems are highly variable. Allele and haplotype frequencies can differ among populations because human populations have experienced different combinations of migration, selection, genetic drift, admixture, geographic isolation, and demographic history.
Published immunogenetic research also demonstrates considerable diversity within Africa itself and differences between particular African and U.S. populations.
This matters to the broader inquiry.
But another boundary is essential:
FRFT is not claiming that HLA causes the Copper Undertone.
No such relationship has been established by this project.
Instead, HLA represents an independent comparative research track.
A future ethically approved study could examine independently:
documented genealogy, calibrated skin colorimetry, historical classification, population-genetic information, and HLA profiles where scientifically appropriate and voluntarily consented.
Researchers could then determine whether any statistically meaningful relationships exist.
The correct scientific approach is not to assume the relationship.
Test it.
12. Artificial Intelligence Helped Discover the Question
Artificial intelligence played an unusual role in this project.
FRFT used AI repeatedly to assist with visual comparison.
It helped compare lighting conditions and apparent color differences. It also helped demonstrate that different photographs of the same person could generate inconsistent preliminary observations.
But AI also demonstrated its limitations.
An AI model examining an uncontrolled photograph cannot reliably establish someone’s ancestry.
It cannot establish Freedmen status.
It cannot reconstruct genealogy from skin.
And it cannot convert an uncontrolled social-media photograph into calibrated scientific evidence.
What AI did accomplish was valuable:
It helped identify a question worth investigating.
The next phase belongs to controlled research.
13. Six Research Tracks Now Converge
The Copper Undertone Observation has developed into six interconnected research areas.
History examines archival records, early American complexion terminology, slavery-era advertisements, and historical reclassification.
Science examines controlled photography, calibrated imaging, colorimetry, spectrophotometry, and reproducibility.
Comparison examines cross-population observations, including the African comparison phase that challenged the original hypothesis.
Genetics provides an independent investigation of population structure, HLA profiles, admixture, and population history without assuming a causal relationship to complexion.
Successors centers documentary genealogy and family continuity connecting historical records to modern Freedmen Successors.
Institutional Purpose concerns building a research record capable of independent examination by universities and other qualified institutions.
No single category establishes the hypothesis.
The important question is whether independent evidence eventually converges.
14. What FRFT Wants Universities to Do
FRFT is not asking universities to accept our conclusion.
We are asking universities to investigate our question.
We invite researchers in history, genealogy, archival studies, anthropology, population genetics, Indigenous studies, African American studies, dermatology, color science, computer vision, digital photography, cosmetic science, and related fields.
Review the historical records.
Examine the slavery-era copper descriptors.
Test the African comparison question properly.
Recruit consented participants.
Control the lighting.
Measure the color.
Analyze the data.
Study historical classifications.
Reconstruct families.
Evaluate population-genetic information independently where scientifically justified.
Attempt to replicate the observation.
Attempt to disprove it.
Science advances through both.
15. What Would Make the Hypothesis Stronger?
The next phase should create a formal research dataset.
That dataset should document participant recruitment, documentary genealogy, geographic family history, photographic conditions, camera information, lighting, calibration standards, sampled skin regions, colorimetric measurements, repeat measurements, relevant environmental variables, comparison populations, contradictory examples, and statistical methodology.
Historical research should separately catalog located copper-description records by date, jurisdiction, exact historical terminology, legal status, reported classification, enslaver where applicable, family information, location, and any subsequent record capable of identifying the same person or family.
That would transform an institutional observation into something universities could independently evaluate.
16. What FRFT Is Not Claiming
Responsible research requires stating limitations as clearly as findings.
FRFT is not claiming that every Freedmen Successor possesses a copper undertone.
FRFT is not claiming that every person displaying copper coloration is a Freedmen Successor.
FRFT is not claiming that Africans cannot display copper-colored skin.
FRFT is not claiming that appearance establishes Indigenous ancestry.
FRFT is not claiming that HLA determines complexion.
FRFT is not claiming that photographs constitute genetic evidence.
And FRFT is not claiming that the Copper Undertone can replace documentary genealogy.
The current institutional position is narrower:
FRFT observed a recurring phenomenon significant enough to justify controlled multidisciplinary investigation.
17. The Historical Record May Be Larger Than the Categories We Inherited
Perhaps the most important implication of this project extends beyond pigmentation.
American racial classifications were created within particular historical, legal, political, and economic systems.
Those classifications changed.
People were reclassified.
Families crossed categories.
Terminology changed from generation to generation.
The labels found in one census may not match those found in another.
The same family can appear differently across legal records, church records, land records, military records, census schedules, probate records, and vital records.
That is why genealogy matters.
And it is why historical language matters.
A word such as “copper” appearing in early American records deserves investigation within the society that used it.
The question is not simply:
What color were these people?
The larger question is:
Who were they?
And what happened to their families?
18. The Evidence Is Not Finished. The Research Has Begun.
The Copper Undertone Observation began with photographs.
It moved into dictionaries.
Then slavery-era advertisements.
Then Indigenous enslavement.
Then historical reclassification.
Then genealogy.
Then African population comparisons.
Then color science.
Then HLA and population genetics.
Each additional field made the question more complicated.
That is precisely why FRFT believes the inquiry now belongs in a multidisciplinary research environment.
We are building the institutional record.
We are documenting the hypothesis.
And we are inviting qualified researchers to determine what the evidence ultimately supports.
The evidence is not finished. The research has begun.
