FRFT Completes Paperwork for Louisville Physical Freedmen Historical Marker Honoring Civil Rights Leader

Updated: 1 hour ago

The Freedmen Reparations Fund Trust has completed the required project paperwork for a proposed Physical Freedmen Historical Marker in Louisville, Kentucky honoring a respected Civil Rights leader who marched with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

This marker is part of FRFT’s broader historical preservation work to document, preserve, and publicly recognize the contributions of Freedmen leaders, communities, churches, families, and institutions across the country.

The Louisville marker will honor the legacy of a Civil Rights leader whose work helped shape the fight for justice, faith-based leadership, civic responsibility, and community advancement. This is not just a marker. It is a permanent historical record.

Civil Rights Leader Name Protected During Sponsor Review

At this stage, the name of the Civil Rights Leader will only be revealed to individuals, families, businesses, or organizations that complete the Historical Marker Sponsorship Packet.

FRFT is protecting a Verified Freedmen Civil Rights Leader from unnecessary public exposure while the Trust is still in the process of engaging with sponsors, confirming placements, and preparing the project for completion.

This protection allows serious sponsors to review the opportunity through the proper process while respecting the privacy, dignity, and legacy of the person being honored.

Sponsors Can Make History

FRFT is now opening sponsorship opportunities for businesses, organizations, families, and supporters who want to help preserve this history.

Sponsors will have the opportunity to place their name or business name directly on the physical historical marker. Once completed, the sponsor names will become part of the marker’s permanent public recognition record.

If you want people to know that you contributed to preserving history, this is your opportunity. Your name, family name, or business name can live on as part of this historical record long after your lifetime.

There are six total sponsor positions available on the front and back of the marker:

Platinum Sponsor — Top Placement

Gold Sponsor — Middle Placement

Silver Sponsor — Bottom Placement

Sponsor positions are limited and will be handled on a first-come, first-served basis once confirmed by the Trust.

Sponsorship Helps Preserve the Marker Year-Round

Sponsorships help FRFT maintain the Physical Freedmen Historical Marker year-round. This includes support for cleaning, repairs, replacement needs, damage response, vandalism response, and common-area upkeep connected to the marker site.

This preservation work helps ensure the marker remains respectful, visible, and properly maintained in honor of the Freedmen Historical Civil Rights Leader being recognized.

Digital Sponsor Upgrade Opportunity

FRFT is also accepting Sponsor Freedmen Digital Historical Marker support during the sponsor search process.

If enough Digital Historical Marker sponsors participate, the Trust may select the highest contributing approved Digital Sponsor during the active sponsor search period to be upgraded for placement on the Physical Freedmen Historical Marker, if a physical sponsor position remains available.

All upgrades are subject to Trust approval, available placement, final formatting, sponsor confirmation, and completion of the sponsorship process.

This gives supporters who begin with a digital sponsorship an opportunity to help preserve the project early while still having a possible path to permanent recognition on the physical marker.

What Sponsors Receive

Once all sponsorship positions are completed and the marker is installed, approved sponsors will receive:

  • An invitation to join the site celebration

  • Sponsor recognition connected to the physical historical marker

  • A Freedmen Historical Marker Sponsor Certificate

  • A Sponsor Freedmen Digital Historical Marker listing

  • Orange sponsor placement on the Freedmen Nation Eco Map for Historical Preservation

The Eco Map recognition allows sponsors to be publicly connected to the preservation of Freedmen history beyond the physical marker itself.

Why This Matters

Historical preservation requires more than memory. It requires documentation, public recognition, physical markers, digital records, and community support.

By becoming a sponsor, businesses and supporters are helping preserve the legacy of a Louisville Civil Rights leader while also showing public support for Freedmen history, local heritage, and intergenerational remembrance.

This is an opportunity to do more than donate.

It is an opportunity to help place history where the community can see it.
