The Freedmen Reparations Fund Trust has formally issued a legal declaration defining and opposing a rising and organized threat—Anti-Freedmenism.
Anti-Freedmenism refers to any action, policy, ideology, or omission that undermines, misclassifies, or excludes Verified Freedmen—those whose status is based on direct ancestry from U.S. chattel slavery and post-emancipation Freedmen recognized after 1865. This includes acts of institutional erasure, Pan-Africanist overreach, race-based program dilution, and media misrepresentation.
The Declaration on Anti-Freedmenism makes clear that Verified Freedmen are not interchangeable with Pan-African, immigrant, or flat Black identities such as “BIPOC.” It specifically prohibits reclassification attempts, unauthorized use of Freedmen holidays like Juneteenth, and the blocking of Freedmen access to reparative programs or business opportunities.
The Trust affirms its legal standing to issue public designations, take legal action, and enforce licensing against institutions and individuals engaged in Anti-Freedmen practices. This Declaration also strengthens the Trust’s authority to protect the Freedmen identity, economy, and history through formal channels, including the American Freedmen Legal Fund.
As national confusion and political agendas attempt to blur the lines of Freedmen identity, the Trust is making it clear: Verified Freedmen have a distinct legal and cultural status that must not be erased or merged under racial generalizations. The declaration is both a warning and a framework for future legal enforcement.
