Freedmen Nation Is Seeking a Historian to Help Build the Standards That Will Evaluate American Freedmen Curriculum

The Freedmen Reparations Fund Trust (FRFT), overseeing Freedmen Nation and the American Freedmen Legal Fund, is seeking a qualified Historian to contribute to the development of the Historical Lens within our emerging educational standards framework.

This is not simply an invitation to review a textbook or provide an opinion about how American Freedmen history should be taught.

We are building the standards first.

Before Freedmen Nation can systematically evaluate curricula, textbooks, instructional materials, historical narratives, or educational programs, there must be a documented and defensible framework answering a fundamental question:

By what standards should educational material concerning American Freedmen be evaluated?

That foundation is currently being developed.

Stage 1: Building the Standards Before Peer Review

The current work is Stage 1 — Standards Development.

It is important to distinguish standards development from peer review. Peer review will come later.

During Stage 1, subject-matter contributors are developing the standards that will ultimately govern future curriculum evaluations. These standards are intended to create a consistent institutional methodology rather than allowing educational materials to be judged solely according to the personal opinions of individual reviewers.

The Historical Lens is a critical part of that foundation.

The Historian selected for this work will help develop approximately 3–5 distinct historical standards, with each standard capable of standing independently and being supported through credible documentation and recognized historical methodology.

The goal is to create standards that are clear enough to apply consistently and strong enough to explain and defend when a school district, educational institution, publisher, funder, researcher, or member of the public asks how Freedmen Nation reached a particular conclusion.

What Should the Historical Lens Examine?

American Freedmen history cannot be reduced to slavery alone.

The Historical Lens must be capable of examining the broader historical experience and institutional development of American Freedmen, including slavery and enslavement within what became the United States; Emancipation and the Civil War era; Reconstruction; the Freedmen’s Bureau; Freedmen communities, schools, churches, businesses, institutions, and settlements; land ownership and dispossession; post-emancipation labor systems; political participation and suppression; federal and state laws affecting Freedmen; historical terminology and status; and the preservation, distortion, or omission of Freedmen history in educational narratives.

The selected Historian will not simply compile facts.

The work requires helping determine how historical accuracy should be measured when educational materials concerning American Freedmen are evaluated.

That distinction is important.

Why We Are Building This Carefully

Our initial development work has already demonstrated why a pilot phase is necessary.

Creating institutional standards requires considerably more structure than asking knowledgeable individuals whether they agree or disagree with educational content. Standards must have defined scopes, supporting evidence, consistent terminology, documentation requirements, and a methodology that other qualified people can understand and apply.

We are therefore using this developmental period to establish the structure before expanding into a permanent peer-review system.

The lessons from this stage will also help FRFT determine future contributor expectations, workload, timelines, accountability requirements, and compensation structures.

We would rather identify and correct weaknesses now than discover them after outside institutions begin relying upon our work.

Who We Are Looking For

We are seeking a Historian with substantial knowledge of American history and a demonstrated ability to conduct serious historical research.

An advanced degree in History, African American Studies, or a closely related discipline is preferred. Experience working with primary sources, government records, archives, scholarly research, historical databases, or institutional research is particularly valuable.

Knowledge concerning slavery, Emancipation, Reconstruction, the post-Civil War Freedmen experience, Freedmen institutions, and related legal and political developments is strongly desired.

Just as importantly, the individual must be able to work within a structured institutional process, communicate consistently, meet agreed-upon milestones, document sources, and remain engaged through completion of the assigned standards-development work.

Accordingly, the individual ultimately selected to participate in this role must be Status Verified through Freedmen Nation.

Applicants who are not presently Status Verified may still express interest, but they must successfully complete the Freedmen Nation verification process before being formally placed into the standards-development role.

Our verification process is genealogical and documentary. It exists to maintain the integrity of a structure created specifically around the American Freedmen population.

DNA testing is not used as a substitute for the required documentary verification process.

Building Something That Can Last

The objective is larger than a single curriculum.

If Freedmen history is going to be evaluated institutionally, the process must survive scrutiny. It must be documented. It must be reproducible. And its conclusions must be traceable to standards established before a particular textbook, curriculum, or institution is placed under review.

That is why we are beginning with the foundation.

The Historian who joins this effort will help establish part of the historical framework upon which future educational evaluations can be built.

History should not depend solely upon who is telling the story. The standards used to evaluate that story must be equally worthy of examination.
