Freedmen Nation is officially boycotting Jason D. Hill, author of What Do White Americans Owe Black People: Racial Justice in the Age of Post-Oppression, for exploiting the legacy and suffering of Freedmen—descendants of formerly enslaved people in the United States—without offering restitution or recognition to the very communities whose history he profited from.
Hill’s book relies heavily on the experiences, pain, and historical injustices endured by American Freedmen. Yet, despite using our legacy as the foundation for his work, Hill has made no effort to compensate or engage with the verified descendants of those who bore the brunt of this nation’s racial oppression. This form of intellectual and historical extraction is not only unethical—it mirrors the same exploitation Freedmen have faced for generations.
On December 23, 2024, a certified letter was sent to Jason D. Hill requesting $500,000 from the book’s profits to be redirected into a Reparative Fund specifically for Freedmen descendants. As of January 18, 2025, that letter appears to be lost in transit and is being resent.
This boycott will remain in effect until Jason D. Hill publicly acknowledges his misuse of Freedmen history and redirects a portion of his earnings to a fund that benefits the very people whose pain and stories he has commodified. Freedmen Nation calls on all bookstores, institutions, and supporters of reparative justice to join us in this boycott and demand accountability.
