BAFTA Responds to Institutional Complaint as External Review Begins

The Freedmen Reparations Fund Trust (FRFT) and the American Freedmen Legal Fund (AFLF) have received a formal response from BAFTA regarding the concerns we raised following the events at the 2026 BAFTA Film Awards.

After our institutional notice outlining governance concerns, BAFTA’s complaints office acknowledged our correspondence and confirmed that the BAFTA Board of Trustees has commissioned an independent external review into the incident. BAFTA stated that it is treating the events of the ceremony with “the utmost seriousness” and reiterated that an official apology had already been issued following the awards broadcast.

In their response, BAFTA expressed regret for the offense caused to guests, members, and communities impacted by the incident. They also emphasized that the BBC, as the broadcaster of the ceremony, has taken responsibility for allowing the slur to be aired, directing broadcast-related complaints to the BBC or its regulator, Ofcom.

While BAFTA’s acknowledgement confirms that the matter is now under formal review, the response did not directly address several governance questions we raised. These included whether risks were known in advance, what safeguards were in place during the live broadcast, and what institutional policies govern participant risk management during global televised events.

For Freedmen Nation, this moment is not about outrage—it is about institutional accountability.

Our actions so far have included:

  • Submitting formal notice to BAFTA leadership

  • Announcing a boycott of BAFTA-affiliated awards

  • Notifying BAFTA partners and sponsors of governance concerns

  • Requesting that our Peer Review Structure be considered during the review process

The confirmation that an independent external review is underway marks an important step. However, meaningful institutional credibility depends on transparency and structural reform, not acknowledgment alone.

We will continue monitoring the review process and will assess the results carefully once BAFTA releases its findings.

Until measurable governance safeguards are demonstrated, the boycott announced by Freedmen Nation remains in effect.
