The Freedmen Eco Locator serves as a centralized directory where Verified Freedmen-owned businesses, Freedmen Historical Markers, Freedmen Sponsor Historical Markers, organizations, and community resources can be located and supported.
What the Markers Represent
The map helps the public understand the difference between Verified Freedmen businesses, Freedmen Historical Markers, and Freedmen Sponsor Historical Markers.
Black markers identify Verified Freedmen businesses.
Blue markers identify Freedmen Historical Markers.
Orange markers identify Freedmen Sponsor Historical Markers.
This helps our population know where to support businesses, where our history is being preserved, and where sponsors are helping expand historical recognition.
Why Verification Matters
Today, many businesses are categorized under broad racial classifications that often fail to distinguish the unique historical status of descendants of American slaves.
The Freedmen Nation verification process is designed to verify status, not race.
Through verification, a business owner can demonstrate that they meet the standards established by Freedmen Nation and qualify for recognition within the Verified Freedmen business ecosystem.
When consumers see a business listed on the Freedmen Eco Locator, they know the owner has gone through a verification process rather than simply making a claim.
Business Ownership Requirements
To be recognized as a Verified Freedmen-owned business through the locator, the Verified Freedmen owner must maintain at least:
60% ownership of the business
60% controlling interest through shares, membership interests, or contractual authority
Actual operational control of the business
These requirements help ensure that businesses listed as Verified Freedmen-owned are genuinely controlled and operated by Verified Freedmen.

Once you become Status Verified, you may also be able to use American Freedmen Legal Fund advocacy services for business-related support.

As the network grows, Verified Freedmen business owners may also have the opportunity to participate in future import and export efforts under the Trust to help reduce the cost of goods and increase purchasing power for our population.
