For Freedmen Nation Certified Genealogy Specialist, it becomes something much larger—a way to preserve documented family history, strengthen verified family records, and help others establish their own documented family connections.

The Freedmen Nation Genealogy Trainee Program was created to prepare individuals to do exactly that.

What Are Our Genealogy Trainees Learning?

The curriculum is designed to build practical research skills one step at a time through an adult learning model that allows trainees to progress at their own pace.

Throughout the program, trainees learn how to:

• Build and organize documented family trees.

• Read and interpret historical census records.

• Navigate the 1860, 1870, and 1880 census records used in verification.

• Use Freedmen’s Bureau and Freedman’s Bank records.

• Locate birth, death, marriage, military, probate, land, and obituary records.

• Identify parent-child bridge documentation.

• Apply ethical genealogy research standards.

• Organize evidence into a verification-ready file.

• Assist Pending Members through the documentation process.

• Communicate findings professionally and accurately.

By Week 6, trainees may begin working directly with Pending Members under the supervision of the Freedmen Nation Genealogy Department. This gives trainees practical experience while helping families move through the Status Verification process.

Completed assignments are reviewed and recorded as credit minutes through an official Genealogy Trainee Tracker. Trainees advance by completing the curriculum, demonstrating research skills, and participating in supervised verification-support assignments.
