Oakland Reparations Fund Shuts Down Following Legal Action from Freedmen Reparations Fund Trust

In a significant development, the Oakland Reparations Fund has gone offline and removed its public donation presence—including its official website and GoFundMe campaign—following legal action initiated by the Freedmen Reparations Fund Trust (FRFT) in March and April 2025.

This action comes after multiple official notices were issued to the Oakland-based initiative, including a Cease and Desist Letter, a Formal Demand Letter, and a final FOIA-based jurisdictional notice recognizing FRFT’s exclusive oversight authority over all reparations activity for verified Freedmen—the descendants of U.S. chattel slavery.

The Sequence of Enforcement

  • In March 2025, the Freedmen Reparations Fund Trust issued its first formal communication to Oakland Reparations Fund, requesting a halt to their misleading use of the term “reparations.”

  • In April 2025, follow-up notices reiterated that continued fundraising without Freedmen-specific verification was unauthorized and misleading to donors.

  • In May 2025, it was confirmed that the Oakland Reparations Fund’s website was taken down, and their fundraising campaign on GoFundMe was deactivated.

Why This Matters

The Freedmen Reparations Fund Trust, now federally acknowledged via FOIA (Case #2025-FO-00112), has been established to safeguard the lineage-based reparations claim of American Freedmen. That claim must not be diluted, generalized, or misappropriated under race-based models that fail to verify status.

Reparations is not just a buzzword—it is a legal, historical, and moral justice claim owed to a specific group whose labor built this nation.

A Clear Message

The takedown of the Oakland Reparations Fund represents a clear message: unauthorized use of the term “reparations” will be challenged, especially when used to collect money without proper fiduciary or historical accountability.

The Freedmen Reparations Fund Trust will continue monitoring and responding to any misrepresentation of reparations in the public and nonprofit sectors. While we remain open to coordination and correction, we will not hesitate to take action to protect the Freedmen claim.

Moving Forward

Organizations wishing to support reparative justice must operate in partnership with or under the standards of the Freedmen Reparations Fund Trust. All funds raised in the name of reparations must align with Freedmen-specific verification protocols.
