Member of Freedmen Nation | Beneficiary of the Freedmen Reparations Fund Trust
October 17, 1942 – April 9, 2026
Peace Family,
Today we acknowledge the transition of Dorothy L. Miller, a Member of Freedmen Nation and Beneficiary of the Freedmen Reparations Fund Trust, who has returned to Allah.
Dorothy L. Miller was born on October 17, 1942, in Mount Gilead, North Carolina, one of seven children born to Daisy Rush Miller and Buddy Miller. She was raised among a strong family structure alongside her brothers Roosevelt and Woodrow, and her sisters Ruth Anne and Mae Ellen—all of whom have returned to Allah. She is survived by her siblings Margaret and Jimmy, her children Shonia, Evette, and Aubrey, and her grandchildren Danny and Chantelle.
In 1961, Dorothy relocated to Hempstead, New York, becoming part of a powerful wave of Southern Black families who brought culture, community, and continuity to Long Island. In Hempstead and throughout Nassau County, extended families formed lasting bonds—where neighbors became family, and children raised together shared a collective identity. That era—rooted in church, gatherings, music, and shared experiences—defined a generation.
There is not enough space to fully capture the depth of the Foundational Black American experience in Hempstead during the 1960s and 1970s. It is a history lived, remembered, and carried forward through families like hers.
Dorothy is also remembered alongside her grandson Donald, who returned to Allah at the age of 18. She will be laid to rest above him at Greenfield Cemetery in Uniondale, New York.
At the time of her transition, Dorothy and her family were navigating serious hardship, including housing instability and ongoing concerns surrounding her medical treatment. The family has requested support in securing proper arrangements, including burial and further review of her care.
The Freedmen Reparations Fund Trust formally recognizes Dorothy L. Miller as a Verified Freedmen and Beneficiary, and we stand in acknowledgment of her life, her status, and her family during this time.
Additional details regarding her going-home services and support efforts will be shared as they become available.
May she rest in peace. May her legacy remain.

Take your rest Freedman Miller.💜
