Juneteenth” Removed from Event Listings on Eventbrite Following Action by FRFT

In a significant move to uphold the cultural and historical integrity of Juneteenth, Eventbrite has removed the term “Juneteenth” from several event listings after receiving formal complaints from the Freedmen Reparations Fund Trust (FRFT). These actions underscore the importance of preserving Juneteenth’s meaning as a commemoration of the emancipation of American Freedmen.

Unauthorized Use of “Juneteenth” Addressed

The FRFT identified multiple events that misappropriated the term “Juneteenth,” detaching it from its historical context and significance. After thorough review, Eventbrite took corrective measures to remove the term from the following listings:

Upholding the True Meaning of Juneteenth

Juneteenth is a federal holiday that specifically commemorates the emancipation of formerly enslaved American Freedmen—not a generic celebration of freedom, African heritage, or pan-Black identity. It is a status-based observance rooted in U.S. chattel slavery, Freedmen lineage, and federal emancipation policy.

The use of “Juneteenth” in cultural events without alignment to this context undermines the dignity and legal meaning of the holiday. The FRFT will continue to enforce protections under Trust Law to prevent dilution or unauthorized commercial usage.

Need Certification to Use “Juneteenth” in Your Event?

If you want to use “Juneteenth” in the official title or marketing of your event, you must apply for cultural certification through the FRFT. This ensures alignment with the event’s origin and historical foundation.
