A Simple Planning Tool for FRFT Beneficiaries: Keeping the Trust Informed

Estate planning looks different for everyone. Some people have detailed plans in place; others take smaller steps over time. To support that range of needs, the Freedmen Reparations Fund Trust (FRFT) offers an optional Beneficiary Notification Card as a convenience tool for beneficiaries who choose to use it.

This tool is not mandatory. It does not change beneficiary status. It exists solely to reduce confusion and help families know who to contact if something happens.

What the Notification Card Is

The Beneficiary Notification Card is a short, one-page form that a beneficiary may fill out and share with trusted people in their life. Its only purpose is to make it easy for someone else to notify FRFT if:

  • The beneficiary passes away

  • A will is executed or filed

  • Probate or estate proceedings begin

That’s it. No authority is transferred. No decisions are made by the person who notifies the Trust.

Why Some Beneficiaries Find This Helpful

In many families, people are unsure who to contact when estate-related matters arise. Important information can get delayed or lost, especially when multiple institutions are involved.

Some beneficiaries choose to use this card because it:

  • Gives family or friends clear guidance

  • Prevents administrative delays

  • Helps the Trust update records accurately

  • Reduces stress during already difficult moments

Others may decide not to use it at all. Both choices are respected.

Who the Card Is Meant For

If a beneficiary chooses to use the card, it is typically shared with:

  • A close family member

  • A trusted friend

  • An executor, attorney, or personal representative

The role of these individuals is notification only. They are not responsible for Trust matters and are not given access to Trust assets or records.

How Notification Works

If notification is needed, it can be done simply by contacting FRFT:

The Trust handles any follow-up directly.

Entirely Optional, Always Respectful

The Beneficiary Notification Card is provided as a courtesy. It does not impose obligations, requirements, or conditions. It is one of several ways FRFT aims to support clear communication and responsible administration, while respecting personal choice and family dynamics.

Beneficiaries are encouraged to use the tools that make sense for them, when and if they choose to do so.
